We Have Reached the Tipping Point for Electric Vehicles .. EV / ZEV

Electric vehicles (EVs) are revolutionizing the global automotive landscape, much like color TVs did in the 1950s.

Initially, color TVs were expensive and uncommon, but once prices dropped, they quickly became household staples. Today, a similar rapid shift is happening with EVs.

By the end of last year, 31 countries surpassed the crucial 5% tipping point for new car sales being purely electric, marking the onset of mass adoption.

There has been a surge in EV adoption, with the number of countries crossing this 5% threshold increasing from 19 in 2022 to 31 in 2023.

Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Turkey, are now some of the fastest-growing markets. Thailand, for instance, saw EV sales rise from 5% to nearly 13% within a year, driven by the establishment of its first domestic EV factory.

This tipping point is significant as it represents the transition from early adoption to mainstream acceptance, overcoming initial barriers like cost and infrastructure. There is a virtuous cycle that ensues: more EVs lead to greater visibility and investment, further expanding charging infrastructure.

In the US, the tipping point was reached in late 2021. While the country initially lagged, EV sales have steadily increased, accounting for 8.1% of auto sales last quarter. The adoption curve suggests that even countries initially slow to embrace EVs can rapidly accelerate once key barriers are overcome.

Globally, the EV tipping point was crossed in 2021, and by the end of 2023, fully electric cars made up about 12% of new car sales worldwide. This growth is driven by decreasing battery prices, expanding charging networks, and improving vehicle performance.

In Canada Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV’s) including hybrids accounted for more than 10% of all new vehicle registrations in 2023 for the first time.

Conclusion:

The momentum is expected to continue, bringing the world closer to a sustainable automotive future, creating a virtuous cycle … key elements include continued incentives, innovation in energy storage, and increased efforts in expanding charging infrastructure.
